Beckwith & Hanlon were commissioned by the National Trust to undertake a comprehensive survey of all drainage and utilities within close proximity of Cragside House. The main priority of this exercise was to understand the nature and condition of the existing surface water drainage culverts to the hillside at the rear of the house, as water ingress to the house was becoming a major issue.

Using the latest, state of the art drone technology, GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) and CCTV surveys, provided by one of our long-standing partners, a comprehensive survey was supplied, so that accurate modelling could be undertaken to identify the flow path of water around Cragside House. The detailed survey included identifying the locations of the existing culverts, so that they could be assessed for performance and a specific scope of recommendations could be provided, to address the clients following priorities;
- Urgent works to mitigate water ingress into the House.
- Remedial repair work to mitigate or prevent further damage to the drainage system, including historic drainage culverts.
- Repair work to improve the efficiency of the existing system, maintaining an awareness of the historically significant nature of the site.
- Suggestions of ongoing maintenance requirements.
- Recommendations for future proofing the drainage system, to mitigate the impact of climate change.
Beckwith & Hanlon have followed up this work with some further advice on drainage issues elsewhere within the Cragside Estate.
