Smulders Projects UK is located in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne, on the banks of the River Tyne. This production facility is mostly used for the production and assembly of foundations and substations for offshore wind farms.
Beckwith & Hanlon were commissioned to undertake a Flood Risk Assessment to support a planning application for a rectangular shaped temporary (modular construction) workshop building to provide a flexible indoor working area, associated with the production of wind turbine components.
The site fell into the Environment Agency, Flood Zone Categories 1, 2 and 3, therefore we were able to work alongside the nominated Planning Consultant to address the ‘Sequential Test’ element of the assessment to comply with National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) guidance.
In addition, the temporary building was in close proximity to Northumbrian Water Ltd (NWL) existing sewer infrastructure, such as a combined sewer, foul water pumping station and associated rising main. Therefore, we prepared and submitted an enquiry to NWL to confirm that the building could be constructed safely and without compromising the existing NWL asset, to ensure that there would be no objection by NWL (who are a statutory consultee) at the planning application stage.
Following on from the location of the temporary building, a permanent fabrication shop to the west of the development was proposed. Beckwith and Hanlon provided a further Flood Risk Assessment to support the planning application.
Furthermore, intrusive ground investigation, including cable percussive boreholes was commissioned, to assist in the removal and relocation of an existing retaining wall to accommodate the permanent fabrication shop and also inform the pile foundation design for the permanent fabrication shop.
